Considerations and Variations
Not all pocket spring units are created equal. When evaluating, consider:
Coil Count: While not the only factor, a higher coil count (e.g., 1000+ for a Queen size) often means smaller, more numerous
springs that can provide more precise contouring. However, the quality of the wire and fabric is just as important.
Coil Gauge: The thickness of the steel wire. A lower gauge number means a thicker, firmer spring (e.g., 13-gauge). A higher gauge
number means a thinner, softer spring (e.g., 18-gauge). Many units use a zoned system with different gauges in different areas
(firmer springs in the center for hip support, softer at the head and feet).
Spring Design:
Standard Hourglass: The most common shape.
Micro/Mini Coils: Smaller springs often used in comfort layers for extra plushness and responsiveness.
Dual-Coil Systems: Some premium mattresses have two layers of pocket springs (a base layer of larger coils and a top layer of
smaller micro-coils) for enhanced support and comfort.
Combination with Comfort Layers: Pocket spring units are almost always paired with top comfort layers (memory foam, latex,
gel, pillow top). The combination determines the overall feel (plush, firm, etc.) of the mattress.
