What it is: The total number of individual pocket springs in the mattress.
What to know: Generally, a higher coil count indicates the potential for more precise support and
better contouring, as the pressure is distributed over more points.
Typical Range: Can range from around 600 in a budget-friendly queen size to over 2,000 in a high
-end model. For a queen mattress, a good benchmark is 1,000+ coils.
Important: Don't look at coil count in isolation. The quality of the steel, the design of the coil, and
the comfort layers are equally, if not more, important.
What it is: The thickness of the steel wire used in the springs. The lower the gauge number, the
thicker and firmer the wire.
What to know:
Low Gauge (e.g., 12-13): Thicker wire, firmer feel, more supportive for heavier weights.
High Gauge (e.g., 15-18): Thinner wire, softer feel, more conforming.
Many mattuses a mix of gauges in different zones for targeted support (e.g., firmer coils in the
center third for the hips).
